ABOUT THE ARTIST

Diann Lewis-Bishop, internationally recognized artist, was born in West Virginia and is now a resident of Maryville, Tennessee. Her work encompasses various media and myriad subjects. Bishop’s murals, paintings, graphite drawings, and mixed media are viewable in private homes, public buildings, hotels, and churches in various states. Over the years she has melded her art works with her strong teaching skills and has won awards and honors.

Within much of her work, there is a story, whether obvious or hidden. When viewers stand before it, they will find much to conjure with. Her colors, when painting historical or religious murals, evoke the era they are depicting. In portraits, she captures the spirit of the person within, as well as their likeness. Her work makes you want to stop, look, and listen to the voices of the artworks.

As a 21st century artist, Bishop brings the discipline and vision of the Old Masters to her work with modern day paint and ideas. Her strong work ethic learned in West Virginia serves her well in depicting the past, the present, and the future in her art.

To help others capture the joy of art, Bishop also conducts workshops and classes for adults and children at Fine Arts Blount, in Maryville, Tennessee, and also at Oak Ridge Art Center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Bishop has developed a program based on American folklore for use with youth art workshops, camps, and classes.

The program introduces folklore, journaling, printmaking, and clay and is a creative collaboration of students and teacher. The students journal their version of the tale and then develop their words into visual stories using painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, and clay as their media. The end results show how a character and story can change by layering ideas, textures, shapes, and time.
